I grew up in a coal mining village in Mpumalanga and matriculated as a boarder from a girls’ school in Pretoria in 1965. After school, I completed a BA degree at Stellenbosch University with Mathematical Statistics and Psychology as majors. Then I taught for a number of years after obtaining a diploma in high school teaching. In 1970, I married Neil Broekmann and was a housewife for several years while our two daughters were still young. Later I was privileged to study part time, completing a Master’s degree in Psychology (with distinction) and an internship through the Unit for Counselling Psychology at the University of Stellenbosch. In 1988, I joined a psychology practice in Paarl and subsequently also started consulting from my home in Stellenbosch. For the past 18 years, I have been involved with training intern psychologists, and more recently also B Psych counsellors. Since 1996, I have been involved with a free service at the Stellenbosch Hospital, and since 2000 I have managed the ever expanding Good Hope Psychological Service in Stellenbosch and Paarl.
